Intelligent communication with unintelligent equipment

A distinction is usually drawn between intelligent and unintelligent equipment. An intelligent device can process the data pertaining to it, e.g. its address in the network. An unintelligent device cannot do this. Many measurement devices, scales, bar code readers and other equipment are usually unintelligent. Consequently, communication with such equipment is difficult. As a rule, Westermo modems are transparent, i.e. the modem is ignored when the computer and the equipment communicate with each other. In order to solve the problem of communicating with unintelligent devices, Westermo has developed intelligent modems. This type of modem is addressable and equipped with a data buffer. This means that the modem will add necessary intelligence to the equipment. These addressable modems can be used to address equipment. MA-43 can handle the RS-485 interface and can address up to 239 addresses. Up to 32 MA-43 units can be connected to the same bus without a repeater.
